African Women Farmers at Risk
African women grow 90% of Sub Saharan Africa’s food and yet government strategies focus on cash crops and educating men (BBC; accessed April 21, 2011). In a study quoted in the story, only 60 out of 800 women interviewed had training on pesticide spraying. The quest to feed Africa is compromised by equipping the wrong players with the right tools.
Similarly, small scale farmers in Africa face the threat of exclusion as land tenure rights get ignored (The Guardian; accessed April 21, 2011).
