Background
Africa is getting poorer while the rest of the world gets richer. The Africa Resource Bank (ARB) was set up to address this phenomenon. It is a network of organizations and individuals promoting concepts and strategies that will enhance economic freedom and wealth creation in Africa. Our first Africa Resource Bank Meeting in 2003 focused on 'Building Africa through Trade', and as a result of fruitful brainstorming sessions we published the book Reclaiming Africa. Our second ARB meeting, focused on 'Property Rights in the African Context', in which the yet to be published outcome points out the fact that the concept of property rights is not alien to Africans and challenges the African elites and leaders to strategically employ the use of protection of property to spur economic growth in the continent.
The Third Africa Resource Bank Meeting
The Third ARB meeting will focus on aspects of how Business can Conquer Poverty in Africa. The meeting will explore ways in which business can offer solutions to African problems through the expansion of markets for their products. It will also focus on ways of increasing the productivity of the African people.
Unlike the ongoing debate on whether Africa needs more aid or debt relief that portrays Africa as a burden and a scar on the conscience of the world, the convener of this forum argues that use of business to fight poverty will redefine the African solution. "By opening up to itself and nurturing a sound business environment, Africa will realize her goal to prosperity," says Shikwati.
Held in the serene environment of Lake Bogoria Spa Resort, this year, over 45 delegates from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Canada, U.S.A and Germany will participate. Participants are drawn from the business, NGO, government, academia, rural community opinion leaders, members of parliament and media. This is an annual event for Africans and friends of Africa keen on a better Africa.
The ARB is hosted by: The Inter Region Economic Network, Box 135 GPO Code 00100 Nairobi - Kenya. Phone 254-20-2731497, Fax 254-20-2723258
