Is Africa Being Used as a Billboard by The Developed Nations?

Published on 7th November 2006

Africa is more vulnerable to global warming than previously anticipated reports the U.N. at the ongoing Climate Change Conference in Nairobi. Wealthy nations are reported to be the leading culprits in gas emissions that are said to be responsible for global warming. The threats of more famine, coastal flooding and ecological disasters are issues that Africans find it difficult to countenance, because already the continent has a plateful of disasters. Can Africans choose the ‘donkey’ option and avoid the industrial nations ‘alleged’ mistake of contributing negative effects to climate? Is Africa being used as a ‘billboard’ in the developed nations’ quest to regulate their excessive industrial emissions? Rather than opt for ‘assist and support’ Africa, African intellectuals should consider contributing to this debate with a view of improving the standards of living as opposed to falling for the trick to keep the continent pristine at the expense of its people.

In this issue, authors discuss viewpoints on how climate change led to agricultural innovation, how information poverty contributes to famine and why branding is essential to increasing sales of a given product among others.
