HIV/AIDS: Africans are Not Guinea Pigs!

Published on 2nd October 2007

By virtue of its emerging geostrategic renaissance, Africa is ‘up for grabs.’ Consequently, Africans ought to be vigilant to avoid the woes that befell the continent in the 1884-5 scramble and partition that saw European commercial greed, territorial ambition, and political rivalry take over Africa.

In this light, Archbishop Francisco Chimoio, Head of the Catholic Church in Mozambique should be hailed for bringing to light that some countries in Europe are deliberately manufacturing condoms and anti-retroviral drugs infected with the HIV/AIDS virus to decimate African people.

If the cleric has proof, he should go ahead and name the countries in question to pave way for legal action. Africa has not forgotten the Bulgarian saga in which Libyan children are alleged to have been deliberately infected with the HIV/AIDS virus. The  U.S. health officials’ use of  nevirapine  in Uganda, with full knowledge of its fatal side effects is not forgotten.

The fight against HIV/AIDS borders life and death. It requires concerted efforts from the government, private sector, civil society and individuals. It must not be hijacked by people out to garner populism like Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, who claims he can cure Aids in three days; spiritual leaders who either discourage faithfuls from adopting preventive measures or extort huge amounts of money from the victims promising to heal them; and international organizations that blow up HIV/AIDS figures in Africa to attract lavish funding.
