Museveni Is to Blame

Published on 7th January 2008

Kenyans are blaming Uganda's Head of State Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for meddling in the affairs of Kenya which has seen many Kenyans losing their lives in the ongoing election fracas.

The Ugandan Head of State should explain to Kenyans why and what he had come to discuss with Kenya's Mwai Kibaki yet elections were in progress. There is suspicion to the effect that Museveni had sneaked into Kenya to jointly lay down a strategy on how to rig the elections so as to ensure Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) did not ascend to power.

Kenyans view three main factors which they feel could have propelled Museveni to interfere with Kenya's general elections. First and foremost is the issue of the disputed Lake Victoria boundary that has seen several Kenyan fishermen being arrested and detained by the Ugandan authorities for allegedly trespassing into their territorial waters. The ODM presidential aspirant Raila Odinga had promised to resolve the stalemate should his party form the next government. Second; the people of Northern Uganda who had allegedly suffered a lot under the current regime had shown their unflinching support for Kenya's opposition strongman Raila Odinga. This allegedly irked Museveni a great deal and thirdly; Museveni knew that the Kenya's opposition strongman Raila Amolo Odinga would definitely become the president of the East African Community (EAC), a post the Ugandan Head of State had high hope of clinching and therefore he considered Kenya's opposition strongman as a threat.

Museveni should explain to Kenyans why and what he had come to discuss with Kibaki who is believed to have rigged himself into power against the wish of the electorate who are now bearing the brunt of Museveni's costly fallacy.

Kibaki has killed the spirit of democracy that Kenya has enjoyed since the advent of multi-partism by regaining the presidency through the back door against the wish of the electorate.

In 2002, the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) ousted the authoritarian regime under Daniel Arap Moi. He (Kibaki) later on betrayed his colleagues when he refused to honour the Memorandum of Understanding they had agreed on to the effect that he would rule for only one term.

Kenyans have lost faith in Mwai Kibaki following his daylight rigging in the just concluded general elections. Even the International Community have shown concern for the ongoing political violence which has resulted into the death of 300 innocent Kenyans. This has earned the self imposed president a barrage of condemnation the world over.

Kibaki is also accused of manipulating the electoral process to ensure he was re-elected, but Kenya's opposition strongman Raila Odinga has stood his ground to the effect that there should be a re run under the supervision of the international observers to establish the rightful winner saying the presidential election was marred with irregularities.
