Kagame Sentiments on Aid: Lessons for Africa

Published on 12th May 2009

Africa can beat poverty by exporting more and boosting tourism to improve their economies rather than relying on aid as Rwandan President Paul Kagame said recently. Aid has completely failed to meet its objectives of dealing with poverty and has left African populations unstable and more dependent.

The alleged corrupt dealings at Kenya’s treasury that saw taxpayers almost loose $ 120 million due to a “computer error” together with African Union’s assessment that Africa loses an estimated $ 200 billion per year in corrupt deals ought to serve as a wake up call to donors that they are killing Africa.

Kagame’s sentiments on aid must be supported by actions that include Western banks barring corrupt leaders from using their establishments as safe havens for African loot. Africa's political leadership should change focus to people on the continent as a strategic resource.
