In the open ocean, the light of the sun can only reach down to a depth of 200 meters. This upper lit zone is called the photic zone. Plants can only live in this upper region. As one goes deeper down, the light gradually fades and forms a kind of permanent twilight zone. Surprisingly, marine creatures also reside here. Some of them glow as a survival measure.

Whereas many African countries are struggling to remain in the photic zone of development, their systems, cultures, associations and mindsets gravitate them towards the twilight zone.
