Racism: America Should Learn to Listen

Published on 3rd June 2020

The brutal suffocation of George Floyd by American state agents was a high form of injustice in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. Rather than bash the global outrage and mete out more force, it is time America listened.

While America has always espoused that people of different backgrounds can unite into a single nation of justice and opportunity, it is ironic that the racial superiority stance still threatens the country. It remains shocking and unacceptable that many African Americans, especially young African American men, are harassed, threatened and murdered in their own country. How long will this linger?  America should live true to the fundamental truth that all human beings are created equal and endowed by God with certain rights.

Out of frustration, anger can be redirected toward a more powerless substitute that may take the form of a person or even an object. The reality of America's need should thus be seen through the eyes of the threatened, oppressed and disenfranchised protesters.

The best America can do now is to shed the superior-inferior stereotypes, listen and have a sober dialogue that will lead to empathy, shared commitment and a peace rooted in justice and recognition of shared humanity.
