Moi University, Eldoret West Campus Postharvest Technology Project Emerge Champions During the 19th Enactus Kenya Expo 2021

Moi University, Eldoret West Campus emerged the overall winner of the 19th Enactus Kenya Expo 2021 that was held last Friday, July 23, 2021 to identify top university project to proceed for international competition and subsequent pitching for financing. 

The annual Enactus Kenya expo has the overall objective of catalyzing project creation and implementation among its 33 university affiliate members to enable students gain necessary skills for the job market. 

This year’s objective “Business Transformation through Digitalization” encouraged students to come up with projects that can navigate challenges of COVID19. The two-week long expo combined film exhibitions, online skilling forums and opening round competition screened by a panel of business leaders. Top 5 universities proceeded to week two for in-person presentation as per COVID19 protocols.

The Moi University team project focused on postharvest losses management. The first runners-up Kabarak University developed mobile app that enable client’s easy access to house-help services (Mama Fua). The second runners-up Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology’s project focused on solid waste management.

“It is a pleasure to see youth driven initiatives out to assist communities navigates COVID19 challenges. As industry we take keen interest in what Enactus Kenya students are doing as this gives promise to address the demand of new skillset in the job market occasioned by the pandemic,” said Mr. Mohamed Saad, the Chair of Enactus Kenya Business Advisory Council.

The 19th Enactus Kenya Expo 2021 attracted 15 Enactus Kenya affiliate universities (both public and private) whose projects broadly focused on education, climate action, recycling of plastics, food waste management, agri - mechanization, water, sanitation, health, smart technologies and energy. Each team’s project had an opportunity of competing through an online Launchpad6 platform that provided an interface for judges to access annual reports and multimedia projects of not more than 12 minutes long. The university projects were assessed virtually by the selected judges then scored and ranked.

“I congratulate all the universities that participated in project implementation towards a better world with business and technology solutions during these difficult moments. I welcome organizations and private sector companies to join this initiative to afford opportunities for more students to participate in this noble agenda of addressing challenges that face our society,” said Mr. James Shikwati, the Country director for Enactus Kenya.

Moi University, Eldoret West Campus will represent Enactus Kenya in the Enactus World cup on October 14 – 21, 2021 where over 30 international universities affiliated to Enactus will converge virtually to determine the overall winner of the 2021 Enactus World cup.  Moi University (West Campus) and Kabarak University will also join other Sub Saharan Africa Enactus champions to pitch their projects to officials of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation courtesy of Enactus Germany Africa initiative.
