Enactus Students Address Entrepreneurship for Social Impact

Theme: Accelerating Sustainability and Entrepreneurship for Social Impact.

For the last 20 years, Enactus Kenya has mentored over 7,000 university undergraduates on business leadership through community outreach projects and business competition.

This year, the Moi University Annex Campus Enactus team emerged National Champion during the 21st Enactus Kenya National Expo 2023 held at Eastland Hotel, Nairobi, on 22nd July, 2023.

The Expo themed Accelerating Sustainability and Entrepreneurship for Social Impact featured projects in Energy, Housing & Construction, Agriculture, Education and Environment.

The Moi University Annex Campus’ Project Inuka after rigorous impact evaluations impressed the judges drawn from banking and financial consulting services, marketing, business and community development, information technology fields. The project promotes sustainable agriculture by producing organic fertilizer from natural stinging nettle leaves and producing organic nettle leaf supplements that offer numerous health benefits. Ultimately, the project addresses environmental degradation and empowers farmers financially.

The First Runner Up, Moi University Main Campus Enactus team showcased Project Darasa Smart. This is a portable physical and virtual lab with all reagents. It is preinstalled with a smart lab software that enables virtual experimentation.

The Second Runner Up, Egerton University Main Campus Enactus team showcased Project Threadtales that seeks to generate employment opportunities and foster economic independence among the youth by taking them through string arts.

For the last 20 years, Enactus Kenya has impacted lives through community outreach projects, training, thematic events, annual national business competitions and the annual Enactus World Cup. Each Enactus Kenya affiliate university consists of a team with a minimum of 100 members to implement a minimum of 10 community outreach projects to be submitted to the business leaders during the annual Enactus Kenya National Exposition.

The Expo provides a platform for the participating teams to perfect their innovations ahead of the Enactus World Cup Competitions, enhance industry collaboration and provide international exposure. The university with the highest community impact solution is selected to represent Kenya at the Enactus World Cup. This year, the Enactus World Cup will be held in Utrecht, Netherlands.

Yvonne Okwara, the Enactus Kenya Business Advisory Council thanked the competing teams for  scanning their environment and being problem solvers.

“You worked with communities to decipher their needs, challenges and opportunities; developed viable business ideas; and proffered solutions,” she said.   

Enactus Kenya (formerly SIFE Kenya) was launched in Kenya in 2003 following an M.O.U between SIFE International and the Inter Region Economic Network (IREN).
