Over 23 corporate leaders drawn from 21 organizations and students from over 14 universities participated in the Enactus Kenya 22nd Entrepreneurship and Innovation Expo that was held on July 25 – 26, 2024. The expo featured business and engineering projects on energy transition battery innovations. The projects will be showcased again after field trials and the top three university teams scoop cash awards from the Schneider Electric foundation.
Enactus Kabarak University emerged this year’s champions with the “Save The Sicklers” project that tackles overreliance on painkillers to manage sickle cell pain during crises. The project provides thermal massage pads which dilate the blood vessels and alleviate pain as compared to the usual painkillers, some of which are addictive. The university will represent Kenya during the annual Enactus World Cup set for Astana – Kazakhstan later in October this year. Kenyatta University came second and third with “Classify Me,” an education project, and “Shop Okoa,” a finance technology project.
Kenyatta University’s “Classify Me” focused on the career guidance gap for high school students and graduates in Kenya. It empowers students to make informed decisions about their academic and professional futures, ultimately reducing dropout rates and enhancing career satisfaction and success. The “Shop Okoa” project brought farmers and Small and Medium Sized Enterprises on a single community banking platform. The students argue that this is the first Pan-African community banking and digital payments infrastructure dedicated to supporting the unionization of Kenyan smallholder farmers and SMEs, on a single platform.
During the special competition named the “Enactus Kenya Schneider Electric Energy Transition Battery Innovation Challenge,” competing engineering students focused on battery waste management; battery efficiency; battery as a service; and energy storage system among others. The students were drawn from Strathmore University, Technical University of Kenya, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Moi University, Machakos University, Dedan Kimathi University, Maseno University, Multi Media University, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology.
