Nigeria’s government promised measures to avoid future disasters last week. This was after a pipeline explosion that killed 260 people in Lagos. In Nigeria, pipeline fires occur frequently as people try to scoop fuel leaking from broken pipes or those that have been vandalized. Information Minister, Frank Nweke, told BBC that the government was encouraging people to report vandalism and that Nigeria was investing in more refineries to end petrol shortage.

Fight against Poverty Major Challenge for 2007

During the new year address to the nation, President Armando declared the major challenges facing Mozambique in 2007 remain implementing "the national agenda for the struggle against poverty" and fighting the obstacles that hinder the country's development which include: red tape, corruption, crime, "the spirit of apathy and drift", and major endemic diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. He urged all Mozambican to give of their best in 2007. He described 2006 as an year when "national unity, self-esteem and the patriotic spirit were strengthened; the culture of peace and the spirit of inclusion and tolerance were promoted; and the institutions of culture and of democracy were strengthened".

Water Points Built in Samburu-Kenya

Western Union Foundation, Post Bank, Diamond Trust Bank Kenya and the Kenya Commercial Bank have set aside Ksh.3.5 million to rehabilitate and construct water points in the area. According to the Regional Director of Western Union for East and Southern Africa, Mr. Sisa Ntshona, “Western Union is continuously looking for ways to make a difference within the community we operate.”

ADB Approves Ksh 5.6 billion Road Funding

The African Development Bank has approved Ksh. 5.6 billion funding to construct the Arusha-Namanga-Athi river road. A statement by the bank revealed that the 240km road linking Kenya and Tanzania is estimated to cost Ksh.10.4 billion.  “The overall goal is to support regional integration, cross border trade, tourism, socio-economic development of the area and contribute to the reduction of poverty.” The Japanese Bank for International Cooperation is expected to provide part of the payment and the remaining balance will be met by the Kenya and Tanzania government.

KQ Enters into a Code Agreement with Air Mauritius

Kenya Airways and Air Mauritius have entered into an agreement that will see the two carriers share passengers. The code agreement also allows the two airlines to share knowledge, personnel and ground and air services.
