Freedom: The Way Forward for Africa

Published on 27th February 2007

An informed citizenry must guard against political manipulation, look beyond popular clichés and seek understanding of a free society. A renewed commitment to individual initiative, freedom of choice and self responsibility in an institutional setting of private property, rule of law and a limited peacekeeping  government will enable Africans activate their potential and create wealth.

This message was echoed in the just concluded Mont Pelerin Society 2007 meeting that was hosted by Inter Region Economic Network in Nairobi.

The meeting, whose sole objective is to facilitate exchange of ideas that work in the hope of strengthening the principles and practice of a free society and studying the virtues and workings of market oriented systems attracted scholars, think tanks, business people, policy makers, policy analysts, legislators and NGOs from 21 countries (including 14 from Africa) spanning every continent.

It is hoped that the discourse on The Institutional Framework for Freedom in Africa will lead to increased dialogue and proactivity among African nations with a view of walking the talk in an endeavor to stimulate economic growth on the continent.
