Can President Mwai Kibaki and Hon. Raila Odinga tame their pride and stop gambling with the lives of millions of Kenyans. Didn’t Kibaki say that his “government remains committed to its primary duty of protecting the lives and property of all Kenyans” while Odinga pledged to “Walk an extra mile for the sake of the country”?

Where is this dedication when the entire country is falling apart in senseless murder and mayhem? Where is leadership when the country is allegedly held hostage by marauding blood thirsty gangs and troops from a neighboring country? Do the protagonists want to lead cemeteries? It is now clear that the two sides cannot listen to the voice of reason, restrain their troops and stop this meaningless suffering.

Kenya’s scenario presents the AU and UN an ideal chance to reinvent and absolve themselves from the passivity they exhibited during the Rwanda genocide. They must force the striving parties to agree for the sake of regional stability as well as millions of Kenyans on the brink of death, destitution and economic redundancy.
