Theme: Save to invest and grow the economy 

The 3rd IREN Eastern African High School Debate provides a forum for high school students from East Africa to apply basic economic principles to topical policy issues. The program aims at inculcating a culture of entrepreneurship and business thinking among youth from an early age and to promote Kiswahili as the business language in East Africa.  Previous themes covered include; The Effects of Corruption, Privatization and New Technology on a Nation’s Economy and The benefits and challenges facing the East Africa Cooperation and how to enhance this cooperation. This year’s theme isSave to invest and grow the economy’. From 2006, over 65 schools and 400 essay entries have been submitted for competition from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda 

The 2009 IREN Eastern Africa High School Essay writing and Debate competition 

IREN will mobilize High school students in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi to submit essays of not more than 500 words on the topic ‘Save to invest and grow the economy’ in Kiswahili language. IREN judges will select the best essay from each participating school. The best 2 students per participating schools will be invited to defend their essay in a debate. The best 3 students in the debate will receive cash rewards, the best 5 essays will be published by the African Executive magazine.  

Objectives

§         To promote sound economic policy

§         To expose high school students to ideas on wealth creation.

§         To promote use of Kiswahili as a regional language and its use in developmental issues.

§         To promote cultural exchange

§         To promote a saving culture among the youth in Africa
