Launch of National High School Debate on Development Issues

Published on 28th February 2006

The Inter Region Economic Network (IREN Kenya) is set to launch a National Debate Contest in Kenyan high schools based on issues raised in Jasira za Jonathan Gullible: Mtalaa wa Soko Huria.

The objectives of the debate are:

  1. Promoting sound economic policies
  2. Promoting use of Kiswahili in developmental issues
  3. Exposing Kenya high school students to ideas of wealth creation

Jasira za Jonathan Gullible: Mtalaa wa soko huria is the Swahili version of The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible by Ken Schoolland. The book was first published in 1998 and has currently been interpreted in over 20 languages. Jasira za Jonathan Gullible: Mtalaa wa soko huria has been recommended by Kenya Institute of Education as a high school (form 3 and 4) supplementary curriculum support material. The book offers basic development economics lessons to both students and teachers by integrating market economics and literature hence promoting language and development.
