Lack of basic economic knowledge is becoming a critical problem in the East and Central African region. With the unemployment rate on the increase, many are opting for the entrepreneurship path. To equip people in this region with entrepreneurship skills, IREN has launched an East and Central Africa Essay writing Competition which will culminate into a regional Debating Competition on various economic issues currently affecting the region. The objective of this project is to introduce an entrepreneurial mindset amongst the youth hence improve basic knowledge in economic principles. The competition will be based on both the English and Kiswahili versions of the books Jasira za Jonathan Gullible: Mtalaa wa Soko Huria, by Ken Schoolland and Sheria: Mwongozo Bora Kuhusu Jamii Stahiki by Frederic Bastiat. These will also be used as guides by the judges. The winner in the Debating Competition will be awarded a cash prize of $500 and be invited to the IREN’s annual Africa Resource Bank Conference with all costs paid. All essays should be received on or before 30th August 2006. The results will be announced by 5th October 2006. For more information on how to participate click on the link below
