Why Taming Conflicts in Africa is Problematic

Published on 14th April 2025

The ongoing conflicts in DR Congo, Sudan, and South Sudan highlight Africa's chronic struggles with ineffective peace initiatives, as regional organizations fail to enforce lasting solutions due to political rivalries, competing foreign interests, and fragmented leadership. In DR Congo, the EAC's security mission collapsed over mandate disputes; Sudan's war persists despite overlapping diplomatic efforts, with external actors like the UAE and Iran fueling violence; and South Sudan's fragile peace unravels as power-sharing agreements collapse amid ethnic divisions. These crises expose systemic weaknesses—poor coordination, reliance on unstable coalitions, and prioritization of elite interests over civilian protection—leaving conflicts to fester and displace millions. African leaders must put the interest of the citizenry at heart and stop this senseless turmoil.
