IREN in the Limelight
Last week, The Director Inter Region Economic Network, James Shikwati was interviewed on various issues affecting Kenya and Africa. The interviews which were conducted by Trans World Radio, Nation TV and BBC focussed on DDT and Malaria, Social Security and Colonisation respectively. On July 4, 2005 he is expected to attend an interview with KTN at 5pm on Debt Relief.
Meanwhile Mr. Shikwati has left for the United Kingdom to attend a Global Development Summit where the UK plays host to the G8 Summit which is being billed as an opportunity to end poverty. Speakers at the Global Summit will challenge popular but ill conceived notions about ending poverty and offer realistic perspectives about how poor countries can best overcome obstacles to economic development and achieve prosperity it is possible to turn Africa around.
IREN’s Agricultural Research Project
IREN Kenya will for the first time hold a meeting with key agricultural stakeholders at Garden Hotel in Machakos District on July 23, 2005. The aim of the meeting is the Launch of a report entitled ‘Commercial Farming for Low Resource Farmers’ based on IREN’s research in Eastern province. The forum will bring together farmers, Seed Stockists and companies, NGOs, CBOs, Agriculture officials, Micro Finance Institutions among others. Area Members of Parliament will also be present.
