The just completed general elections in Zimbabwe were held against a tense and polarized atmosphere. It is prudent therefore that the presidential candidates show leadership by accepting the will of the people.
Kenya’s experience that saw over 1000 people killed, half a million become displaced, business come to a standstill, property destroyed and the country lose over Kshs 31 billion when a cabal of few elites (driven by personal whims) held over 36 million Kenyans hostage should teach Zimbabwe a lesson. Similarly, Botswana’s smooth transition under Festus Mogae is an example worth emulating.
Zimbabwean policy makers, academia, civil society, clergy, media and ordinary citizens have a tremendous responsibility to ensure that the South African country does not plunge into anarchy. The citizenry must not allow themselves to be used as pawns as the nation is pushed over the cliff.
