The 5th Bukura Cultural Day: Celebrating Youth Energy

The 5th Bukura Cultural Day, an annual event geared towards empowering the youth's vision will be held on December 24, 2009.

The Rural Youth Empowerment League is an initiative of the Inter Region Economic Network (IREN) to enable young people have higher ambitions, get exposed to global trends, celebrate their youthful energies, nurture talent and assist in tackling problems of insecurity. Launched in 2005 December the annual event has brought together an estimated 3,000 participants whose ages range from 4 to 90 years.

The Cultural event is organized by three committees; IREN staff, Wazee Advisory Council of 10 (aged 45 - 84) and the RUYEL youth committee. The key activities of the Annual Bukura Cultural event include, Boda Boda Bicycle racing, soccer, volley ball, netball, tug-o-war, running in gunny bags, balancing bottles, poetry reciting (primary school age), coral/solo verses, essay writing competition, public speaking, children's games, foods and seeds display, Eshilemba (re-enacting old warfare), Sukuti dance, narration of Luhya History, and key note address from guest speakers. The cultural event guest speakers have been drawn from high school headmasters, Luhyas based in U.S.A, Office of the President - Ministry for Youth Affairs officials, and experts on agriculture and malaria control program.
