Chinese Navy Hospital Ship Visits Kenya

To improve the friendship and cooperation between China and Kenya, the Chinese navy hospital ship "Peace Ark" makes a port call in Mombasa from October 13 to 18, 2010.

The medical staff of the hospital ship will provide free medical services to Kenyan civilians and servicemen. The major activities will be as follows:

1. The medical doctors aboard the ship will give diagnosis and treatment for local citizens and students at Kenya Red Cross-Mombasa Branch. When necessary, patients will be transferred in batches to the main platform of the ship for further treatment and operations.

2. Kenyan government officials, navy officers and soldiers, journalists and local citizens are welcome to visit the ship and take physical examinations aboard. 

3. Kenyan medical personnel will receive training and take part in the diagnosis and treatment. Nursing skills, acupuncture and cupping treatment of traditional Chinese medicine will be displayed.

4. A medical team from the ship will also visit a primary school and an orphanage in Mombasa and carry out physical examinations for the children, introduce knowledge about health care. The team will donate medicine, health supplies, stationery and sports goods to the primary school and the orphanage.

The highlights of activities during the ship's port call are as follows:

1. A welcome ceremony for the hospital ship will be held at 10 a.m. local time on October 13 (Wednesday) at Mombasa Port. H.E. Mr. Liu Guangyuan, Ambassador of China to Kenya, Hon. Mr. Kenneth Marende, Speaker of Kenya National Assembly and the government officials of Coast Province and Mombasa City will welcome the ship at the port. 

2. October 15 (Friday) will be marked as the Open Day for media. H.E. Mr. Liu Guangyuan and Rear Admiral Bao Yuping, Commander of "Peace Ark" will hold a joint press conference at 3:30 pm. Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka, Vice President of Kenya will visit the ship at 4 pm.

Kenyan National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende, Chinese Ambassador Liu Guangyuan and local government officials attend.

10:30 Accompanied by Commander Bao, Speaker Marende, Ambassador Liu and other Kenyan officials visit the hospital ship.

Oct. 14 (Thursday)

08:20 Chinese medical teams make diagnosis and give treatment to local citizens at Kenya Red Cross-Mombasa Branch. (Until 5 pm)

08:20 Another Chinese medical team will visit a primary school and an orphanage in Mombasa. Brochures, health supplies, stationery and sports goods donated. 

08:50 Medical staff aboard will carry out professional exchanges with Kenyan counterparts in the vessel.
