Africa Must Grow its Indigenous Agribusiness Sector

Africa’s seed and plant protection market is under developed. According to the African Seed Trade Association, Sub Saharan share in the estimated USD 30 billion global seed business is only USD 800 million (currently estimated at USD 1.5 billion); representing 3% of the world total (Afsta.org; accessed July 2, 2012). Africa’s crop protection market is currently valued at USD 2.5 billion, representing 2% of world total and may increase to USD 4 billion in 10 years (Bloomberg.com; accessed July 2, 2012).
