Zero tillage an additional tool to food security

A project to wean farmers off digging and to increase yields whilst retaining moisture and storing carbon is underway in Western Kenya. Conservation agriculture involves minimum tillage or no disturbance of soil and according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, conservation agriculture can offset up to 1.8 tonnes of carbon emissions per hectare per year (Reuters.com; accessed September 17, 2012).
