DRC Congo: Africa Union Must Be Proactive

Published on 27th November 2012

The devastating effects of the conflict in the DR have reached alarming proportions. With millions dead, over 2 million people displaced, tens of thousands dying from consequences of the war, and tens of thousands of girls and women subjected to sexual violence, the world can no longer watch as a humanitarian crisis escalates in this resource rich region.

Fragile peace agreements have been broken and violated repeatedly. The struggle for control over DR Congo’s natural resources has dragged all of Congo’s neighbors into a regional conflict. Gross human rights abuses by both African and international actors have been done while MONUSCO watches.

The African Union must not let DRC Congo continue wallowing in turmoil. Joint efforts between the African Union and the International community witnessed a semblance of calm in Somalia after 20 years of conflict. Similar steps should be taken to evolve a broad based and transparent initiative to save DR Congo from individual, corporations and countries out to make quick and short term gains out of the country. A stable DRC Congo is a prosperous Africa.
