Engaging Senator Ted Cruz

Mr Ejike Okpa with Senator Ted Cruz

Folks, whether you like it, hate it, or are indifferent, based on the comment by US Senator Ted Cruz [R-TX], (see U.S. Senator Ted Cruz: Does He Owe Nigerians an Apology?)I had a meeting with his office and was subsequently invited to meet him at an event the following day. You can see this from the  picture.

The meeting outcome went well and I can assure you, it is put past us. In politics, I meet with anyone even those whose views may be harsh or uncomfortable. My late dad taught me the art of learning from everyone even those that appear antagonistic and adversarial.

I never pass on an opportunity to meet and exchange views to better strength positions. I do not grumble from the sideline – I take on issues to enlighten and enliven better ways. Those I engage do not have to agree, but they do remember that I showed up. That leads to respect - better than an apology. While someone can/may apologize, the individual  may not have respect for me. An apology can be an exercise to just let an offended or aggrieved party go away. I do not look for apology; it is cheap and has no collateral. I may get even, if all else fails, but it never comes to that. With time, attitudes change and relationships get solidified.

I am glad I had the opportunity. I do not think anyone from the US Nigerian community met with Sen. Cruz, before me. He appreciated my reaching out to him and assured me of support and interaction to strengthen community relationship. We need each other: friends and foes alike.

There are no ANGELS in politics, just ANGLES. What is yours?

Living in Texas, has its benefits, especially when one is invested in the community.
