A wealth of ideas and scholarship make a powerful case for a free, entrepreneurial and competitive economy. New generations of leaders are needed to not only explain these ideas in Africa to policy makers and the general public, but also to create organizations such as think tanks for that purpose. To succeed, these organizations need to be well-managed and skilled in communications.

Sound management and effective communications will be the main themes of this leadership conference in Nairobi. The speakers will be James Shikwati, founder and president of IREN; Lawrence W. Reed, president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, one of the largest free market think tanks in the United States; and Joseph G. Lehman, the Mackinac Center’s executive vice president. Reed and Lehman will present condensed versions of the presentations they deliver twice annually at the Mackinac Center’s widely acclaimed leadership conferences in the U.S., which have trained hundreds of think tank leaders and staff from more than 35 countries. Shikwati will explain how their principles and advice can work in an African context, and the methods IREN has employed to become the region’s most successful free market think tank.

Topics to be covered at the conference include strategic planning, marketing free market ideas, organizational management, and friend raising-not-fundraising.
