Africa: Reviewing the Continent’s Past Glory

Published on 23rd December 2014

An exhibition organised by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of The New York Public Library in Delhi recently showcased “forgotten" stories of Africa's footprint in India's history. Dr Sylviane A. Diouf of the Schomburg Center observes that Africans demonstrated prowess in military exploits, administration, trade, architecture, music and art, among other fields, in India. Some even started their own dynasties.

African history is rich with the socio-economic, political and scientific prowess by African people. This history has been both consciously and unconsciously suppressed. It will take proactivity by the African people to unearth it with a view of taking stock on where the continent backtracked, spurring confidence among Africans and charting Africa’s future.Such forums as done by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture ought to be encouraged and spearheaded by Africans.
