Reception Honors Advocates for Stronger U.S.-Africa Relations

The ECOWAS Ambassadors’ Group, will host an invitation-only reception, “The ECOWAS Ambassadors’ Group Honoring African American Leaders,” at 6:30 pm on Monday, September 14, 2015 at the Embassy of Ghana, 3512 International Drive, Washington, DC 20008.

The purpose of this event is for the ECOWAS Ambassadors in Washington, DC to collectively acknowledge and recognize African Americans, during the Ronald H. Brown African Affairs Series, who have played a significant role in advocating for stronger U.S. relations with the ECOWAS countries, as well as Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) as a whole.  Honorees are Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Assistant Secretary, Bureau of African Affairs, U.S. Department of State; Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-CA); Mrs. Florie Liser, United States Trade Representative on Africa, Dr. Johnnetta Cole, Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art (NMAfA) and Mr. Melvin Foote, President, Constituency for Africa (CFA); and Jummy Olabanji, reporter/anchor at ABC7/WJLA news, will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies.

The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) Ambassadors Group is comprised of Ambassadors representing a regional group of 15 countries, founded in 1975. Its mission is to promote economic integration in all fields of economic activity, particularly industry, transport, telecommunications, energy, agriculture, natural resources, commerce, monetary and financial questions, social and cultural matters.

Believe in Africa (BIA) is an African diaspora -led initiative founded by former U.S. congressional staffers and African leaders in the U.S., to empower young Africans, harness the power of the African diaspora, educate policy makers and the public about African economic growth and highlight the continent’s gradual rise in the global community.
