Lessons from Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng

Published on 10th May 2017

Former Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari’s  recent protest against racism earned him two yellow cards from Daniele Minelli, the referee. Due to great public outcry, the Italian Football Federation rescinded the player’s one-match ban. In 2013, a friendly match between AC Milan and lower division club Pro Patria was abandoned after Milan's players walked off the pitch because of racist chants in Europe. Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng took off his shirt and walked off with his Milan teammates.

Africa has created millions of people in war and peace whose luster and bravery have been excellent. We must canonize our own saints and elevate to positions of fame and honour black people who have made distinct contributions to our socio-political and economic history. The global systems will not always be in favour of Africa but the continent must be bold enough to identify and articulate its position and interests without apology.
